This Queen Anne Style Victorian home is located at 588 East Eleventh Avenue, at the heart of downtown Eugene, Oregon. The home was built in 1899 for Windsor W. Calkins and his wife Anna.

Windsor Calkins was a prominent Eugene attorney, banker, city councilman, and state legislator. In 1910 Windsor Calkins, along with his brother S.M. Calkins, founded the law firm of Calkins and Calkins which still operates today. As the owner and president of Merchant's Bank of Eugene, he engineered the merger of his bank with Eugene Savings and Loan. The surviving bank, Merchant's Savings Bank of Eugene, which later became U.S. National Bank of Eugene and eventually U.S. National Bank of Oregon. Mr. Calkins was then named to the position of President and Chairman.

Mr. Calkins was also a prominent civic leader and city councilman. He was an active Republican and served in the Oregon House of Representatives, and two terms in the State Senate. In 1906 a local typhoid epidemic prompted Mr. Calkins to help Eugene establish its first clean water system. That system was the forerunner to the Eugene Water and Electric Board, E.W.E.B.

Windsor and Anna purchased the East Eleventh site in 1899 for $1,300. They then commenced construction and completed the home in 1902 at an additional cost of $5,700. The site was chosen as it served central to Calkins' business law practice, his major clients: Sacred Heart Hospital, the University of Oregon and his banking company. The Calkins family occupied the house until Mr. Calkins' death in 1945.

The home was designated as a Eugene City Landmark in 1976 and named to the U.S. Register of Historical Places in 1981. This exquisite home is considered to be Eugene's Crown Jewel and the finest remaining example of the Queen Anne style of Victorian architecture. The home still occupies its original site.

In 1899 11th Avenue was the main route between the University of Oregon the hospital, the bank and Eugene downtown. The home typifies the style of gracious, stately homes that were built along 11th Avenue between Mill and Kincade Streets. The homes in this area were considered the prestigious homes of that era; set far back from the street and with spacious yards.

The home is well preserved in its original state, including color. With its prominent location on 11th Avenue at Patterson, the stately home with the third story corner turret is a familiar site. The home also features ornate chimney stacks, multiple roof gables and bays, a classic veranda covered porch, and a variety of exterior wood siding materials. The inside features an open staircase, leaded glass and stained glass windows, wooden columns and floors, ornate woodwork and a unique wooden mantel over the fireplace. Today the home is the only remaining link to the East 11th Avenue charm of yesteryear.

The home consists of 3 stories and a full basement. Approximately 4000 sq. ft. of finished living area and 1200 sq. ft of unfinished basement area.

The home has undergone several renovations, minor and major, including the most recent in 1993 when the home was acquired by the present owners/tenants. That renovation restored the original beauty and old charm of the home. The home serves as the corporate offices for their business, First Security Financial.

The home sits in a very prominent area of downtown Eugene. The site is close to much of central downtown Eugene; 3 blocks to the new Federal Courthouse, 2 blocks to the new downtown area and sports arena, the Willamette River, and the Mill Race, 2 blocks to Sacred Heart Hospital & Medical Center, 3 blocks to the University of Oregon and 6 blocks to the center of downtown Eugene, Lane County Courthouse and City Hall.
